Title:
Nap Rooms in Policing: Two Studies on the Impact of Shift Work on Sleep and Performance
Abstract:
This study examines the impact of nap rooms on sleep quality and performance of police officers working shifts. Based on two studies conducted with the Baden-Württemberg police in Germany, the use of nap rooms at a police station and a control center was evaluated. The findings indicate that the use of nap rooms, particularly during night shifts, led to improved alertness, concentration, and subjective performance. A positive effect on overall sleep quality was also observed in one user group. No negative effects on operational performance or signs of sleep inertia were reported. Despite a small sample size, the studies provide initial evidence that nap rooms could be a practical and health-promoting measure in policing. Further research into broader acceptance and factors such as nutrition is needed for further insights.
